Fall Ciders of New England
November 19, 2019Interview with Apple Artist, William Mullan
December 3, 2019In the every growing landscape of the cider scene there are companies tailored to being more mindful drinkers. One of those companies is the Better Wine Co. You may be asking yourself wine…I thought this was cider scene but do not fret they also have a dry rosé cider on deck. Better Wine was focused on bringing wines and 1 cider to the market and the absence of abundant sugar and additives to create a healthier product. With winter creeping upon us a lower calorie drink is good anyways to keep the winter pounds away!
To start with the cans are very beautifully decorated with flowers and branches on a petite 250mL can. It is advertised as a dry Rosé cider with 90 calories, 0 grams sugar, unfiltered, and 5.9% abv. That alone makes it a desirably marketed product to those spritzer or hard seltzer drinkers out there. On the back, they also describe the taste as fruity, fizzy and crisp, made with apples and grapes with minimal sulfites. All that being said let’s see what is inside the can. It pours a slightly cloudy red with red/purple color tones. The red color or rose color likely comes from the grapes in the mixture. There is a small number of bubbles that sit on the top of the glass when you pour it but they are more prominent if you drink from the can. The smell is a mix of both dry red wine and cider which makes sense from the ingredients but makes for a cider scent that is unfamiliar. It is almost reminiscent of a red fruit snack in the best way. When you taste it you get a bit of the fizziness on the tongue throughout the sip.
The first thing that hits you is the tart punch of the apples and grapes on the back end. While it is dry and tannic there is a large punch of acidic flavor from the ingredients still in the beverage. The lasting flavors read more like a wine spritzer but there are apple flavor notes throughout. The tasting experience is a fun one and would be best for someone who enjoys spritzers, wine, and sweeter ciders even without the sugar in this product. Traditional cider drinkers may find this a bit different or odd but it is a nice change and something unique in the category.

The Good: healthy conscience cider choice in a cute little can
The Meh: It is a bit of a different cider experience and taste like a wine spritzer
Revisit: Perhaps for summer or the winter months when we don’t want to pack on the pounds, advertised probably more for a woman’s palate.
