While traveling around earlier this summer, we realized one thing was missing from our adventures. We didn’t have a good way of keeping our scores of cider cold before enjoying them later during an outing or vacation. While we had some smaller coolers, we did not have anything up to the task for craft beverage bloggers! This set us on a quest across the internet to find the best value in large format coolers. This deep dive into the market drove us to form a must-have list: over 55 quarts to fit a ton of product, well insulated design, rollers – if possible, and great aesthetics. With all that in consideration, we ended up at the Blue Coolers and their 55-quart ice vault with wheels.
Before we get into our review, it would be good to know about the brand a bit. Blue Coolers is a Utah based company who wanted to make more affordable coolers that are just as rugged. Their variety of product sizes and colors along with accessories is adequate in the market. Where the value comes in is the design and price. The depth of insulation, optional wheels, non-skid feet, integrated bottle opener and handles are all features at a favorable price point. Of course, all of this comparison leads us to real world usage and they do not disappoint.
Since getting our Blue Cooler, we have used it day trips and road trips about a dozen times. Our first hands-on experience came when loading the cooler. This model holds around 60 cans with a fair amount of ice or around 72 cans without ice and the cooler is wide enough to stack some pans on top if you need to carry some food. We found this size to be perfect for most extended outdoor events and road trips. The handles and roller handle came in handy when carry around and loading up the cooler. The handle design was great for lifting with 2 people, and on flat ground — easily rolled around. The locking tabs keep the unit shut snuggly and we had zero performance issues. Wanting to test this out, we also kept the ice in the cooler a few times after extended use and it lasted on average 5 to 6 days before fully melting. Overall, the performance was as good as some of their competitors but some of the value added features and the price was a huge win in our book. If you need a bigger cooler that won’t break the bank, we do suggest the Blue Cooler.
