Podcast: Getting “Buskey” with Buskey Cider
February 21, 2019Urban Farm Fermentory: Cid’ah and More!
March 5, 2019I was finally able to head on over to Brickworks Cider House in one of my favourite cities, Toronto (or the 6ix as Drake calls it; however, I’m not that hip). I have been trying to visit this cider house for a while but being an adult doesn’t always allow me a lot of free time for cider. Brickwork’s building is located in Toronto’s distillery district on the corner of Queen Street E & Broadview. Aside from quality craft cider, they also have lunch and brunch if you want to have some snacks with your cider.
When deciding on what to drink, nothing looked cuter in photos than their cider flights, so I had to try that! Brickworks had a list of options and you could try 4 (5oz) ciders for $16CAD. I decided to go for the following:
- Queen Street 501 (5% ABV)
- Mint Basil (5% ABV)
- Andrew & The Blueberries (7% ABV)
- Pink Boom (6.9% ABV)
The ciders were all very different from each other. I did this on purpose so I wouldn’t say something like: “WOW THIS IS SWEET, SO IS THIS ONE, AND THIS ONE…” you get it. The first one is a classic apple cider, on the sweeter side but not over powering. I recommend this one for those who have just begun their journey in the cider world as it’s a great starting point! The mint basil is exactly how it sounds…minty and basily. These are both very powerful tastes, so as far as the apple goes, I found it to be lost in this one. However, I found it very refreshing!
Third is the cider that sounds like it could be an awesome band name: Andrew & The Blueberries. This one was definitely dry (as I’ve found with most blueberry ciders). In this one you could taste hints of thyme, as well – very complimentary flavor combination. Lastly, is the Pink Boom. This medium-dry cider is flavoured with hibiscus, cardamom, and plum. For those who aren’t a fan of the flowery flavours, I’d stay away from this one. Surprisingly, I’m one of those people but I did really enjoy this cider!
Overall a great cider experience with plenty of variety in their products. If you’re in the Toronto area, I’d recommend stopping by and saying “hi” to Brickworks!
