Everybody has that one friend that knows how to throw a party, am I right? The friend that you can rely on for the invite list and they know that Aunt Shirley can’t be seated next to Uncle Scott because of some drama that happened 10 years ago, Nikki used to date Taylor so make sure she knows he is coming too. This friend has everything figured out down to the last detail; the food, drinks, the porta-potty placement and most importantly the entertainment.
That friend over these next 11 days is Oregon Cider Week. There are so many incredible events going on full of cider education events and unforgettable cider adventures!
Let the Games Begin
To kick things off (the party before the party, the party eve, if you will) the Northwest Cider Association put together a fabulous event that showcased 20 cideries and over 70 ciders. This event proved to be a great gathering of industry members giving each an opportunity to share and support each other and the amazing ciders that they have been producing and a good reminder of other ciders that maybe hadn’t been tasted in a while.
A few ciders that left a memorable impression were 1859 Cider Co’s strawberry cider; so fresh and bursting with strawberry flavor, Alter Ego and their peach cider, and WildCraft Ciderworks’ Blackberry Botanical. Each of these is sure to be a hit for the hot summer months coming up. A special treat was donuts made by Blue Star Donuts that were made with Finn River’s Black Currant Cider.
For the remainder of the Oregon Cider Week listed below are some of the highlighted events that are destined to be a good time:
- Wildcraft Ciderworks is throwing a Snakebite Flight Night at their taproom in Eugene Friday night where they’ve combined some very cool ciders and beers to make this traditional English beverage.
- A festival on Bauman Cider’s century-old farm
- Live music in Hood River
- Fruit Cider Invitational at Cider Riot
- Cirque d’Schilling (an adult only circus themed party)
- New Seasons Market loves cider so much, they’re putting it on sale all weekend! 20% off from June 22-24th
- If running is your thing then check out The Oregon Cider Week 5K Fun Run it will take place on Sunday, June 24, at 11 am at Portland Cider Co.’s Clackamas location.
- OMSI’s After Dark Ciderfest, which will surely sell out, so buy your tickets early!
Wrapping up this week of cider fun will be the Cider Summit Portland on June 29 and 30. General admission tickets include a souvenir tasting glass and 12 tasting tickets and cost $30 if purchased by 11 pm on June 28, or $35 at the gate. VIP tickets include a souvenir tasting glass, 16 tasting tickets, and one-hour early admission on opening day and cost $40 if purchased by 11 pm on June 28; VIP quantities are limited and are not available at the gate. Event tickets may be purchased at https://www.cidersummit.com.
The festival presents live music, produced in conjunction with the Cascade Blues Assn., that features several of Portland’s legendary artists.
On Friday, attendees can hear the sounds of Robbie Laws and Ed Neumann; the Ty Curtis Duo; and Lloyd Jones. On Saturday, the event will open with Norman Sylvester, continue with the Ellen Whyte Trio, and finish up with the Lisa Mann Band. Cider Summit PDX also features a variety of food offerings from Green Zebra Grocery, Dano’s Dogs, Full Moon Crepes, Blue Star Donuts, Cypress Grove Cheese, and more; a Dog Lounge hosted by DoveLewis and Portland Pet Food Company; and an on-site store featuring festival merchandise and select bottles to go from participating cidermakers.
Lastly, Schilling Cider House has just the event for those who have maybe consumed a little too much cider(although is there such a thing), cleverly named “Hair on The Dog”, need I say more?
