Stone Fence Cocktails and Virtues Cocktail Competition
January 15, 2019The holidays have passed, and the new year is here so why not talk a bit about the top 5 holiday ciders? They are not all Canadian ones, but the majority are. So, if you have a chance, and you’re in Canada, definitely try them out. These ciders capture the flavours of the holidays (take that as you will).
Thornbury Spiced Apple Cider

The first holiday cider on my list is Thornbury’s Spiced Apple Cider. Now, if something tastes like PIE, it definitely fits in with the fall/winter holidays, and I can guarantee you it does taste like it. It is on the sweeter cider with hints of all the good spices (cinnamon, nutmeg- the works). It is definitely one to be enjoyed by the fireplace or throughout the family dinner when your family members ask what you’re doing with your life …AGAIN.
Ernest Cider’s Cranberry Cherry Cider

Second is Ernest Cider’s Cranberry Cherry Cider. Ernest cider is made in Newmarket, Ontario. This company makes an effort to use local, and organic ingredients in their ciders so you know that you are putting good ingredients into your body. This cider gives you the tartness of the cranberry mixed with a little bit of the sweet cherry. Compared to Thornbury, this is definitely more dry cider, but will still be loved by all.
Strongbow Dark Fruit

Next is Strongbow’s Dark Fruit. The first time I tried this I was visiting the UK and of course I fell in love with the blackcurrant and berry flavours, which are very big over in Europe. This is another super sweet cider (I’m so sorry dry cider fans). I find that dark berry flavours are great during the holiday season when we are all gorging on candy or a whole gingerbread house.
Reinhart’s Light Red Apple Cider

Fourth we have Reinhart’s Light Red Apple Cider. Speaking of gorging on food…this cider is on the lighter side so you can feel a bit better about having your family carry you to the car because you can’t move at all. This cider is a nice bright, crisp and refreshing cider but keep in mind it has less alcohol than the others.
Strongbow Dry Pear

Last but not least is yet again another Strongbow. Strongbow Dry Pear is another great holiday cider. Now, when you think of Pears, maybe you think of summer, and so do I- BUT the dryness of it makes it perfect for the season. This cider i’d classify as a semi-dry and has the perfect amount of sweetness that isn’t too overpowering.
Hope you all had an amazing holiday season and that there are lots of ciders in your future in 2019!
